Resolutions Plus

I'm scurrying around, getting ready for the Low Carb High Life Cruise --
we sail this weekend! So I thought I'd simply ask you all to write me
on the New Years theme. I want to know what your New Year's Resolution
is, sure. But I want to know a few other things, along with your New
Year's Resolution:

1) I want to know what you're proudest of in the past year (does *NOT*
have to be health and diet related!) New Year's Resolutions tend to be
about the ways we feel we're not good enough, not measuring up, and how
to be better. Tell us about a way that you're already *great*!

2) I want to know what important thing you *completed* this past year.
We're all *way* too busy, and we tend to see the great mass of things we
still need to do, instead of the things we've actually gotten done. As
a result, we tend not to feel we're getting *anything* done! So to give
yourself that sense of closure and accomplishment, share something
you've gotten done this year!

3) I want to know what you intend to add to your life this year simply
because it will bring you joy! Not because it will make you slimmer, or
healthier, or richer, or more organized -- just because it will put a
great big grin on your face, and make your heart sing. More sleep? Going
dancing regularly? Lunch with friends more often? Taking voice lessons?
Getting a makeover? Treating yourself to a massage weekly? Paying
someone else to clean your house? Installing a lock on the bathroom
door and taking a long soak on a regular basis? Make plans to be happy
in 2001!

4) Last, but certainly not least, we all want to know your single best
low carb dieting tip, recipe, or strategy!

So write and tell me any or all of these things! I want to see my Inbox
*crammed* when I get home! Watch for everybody's responses coming soon!

An Apology

In my last issue, I wish you, my readers, a Happy Yule, Merry Christmas,
Happy Hanukah, or Happy Kwanzaa, whichever you celebrated. I was gently
and graciously reminded by two readers that there was yet another
holiday going on at the time -- the Islamic observance of Ramadan. I do
apologize. Actually, I knew it was Ramadan -- heck, I even knew that
Ramadan slowly moves over the years, and isn't always during the
northern hemisphere's winter. But I'd always thought of Ramadan as a
solemn fasting time, much like the Christian Lent; I wasn't aware that
felicitations were proper. Goes to show how wrong I can be! Turns out
there is much celebration associated with Ramadan, and especially with
Eid, the feast at the end of the fasting month.

I have been educated! And when I was driving home from my visit with my
family in Chicago, I saw the tiny sliver of a new moon, and wished all
my Muslim readers a Happy Eid in my heart.

Now, if any of you would like to send in old family recipes for Ramadan
or Eid that would work for a low carb diet, or might be adaptable, I'd
sure love to see them!

Upcoming Articles

I'm getting ready for my cruise, and of course there won't be an issue
this coming week -- I'll be at sea! But here's a few thoughts I've had
for issues I'd like to tackle in 2001:

* PCOS -- Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome. A complex hormonal disorder
which includes serious insulin derangement, and one that is now being
widely treated with a low carb diet.

* Fibromyalgia -- also called fibrositis or fibromyositis. This is a
generalized inflammation of the fascia -- the connective tissue that
envelopes the muscles -- causing pain and stiffness all over the body.
Although fibromyalgia has long been thought to stem largely from sleep
disorders, some doctors are now recommending a low carb diet as well.

* Nutrition and Mental Health -- I've touched on this issue a few times,
and I've always gotten a big response. In particular, when I wrote
about the apparent link between carbohydrate intolerance and alcoholism,
I got a very big reader response, and a request for more info. So I'll
put articles about the mental effects of nutrition on the front burner
this year.

* We'll have a *bunch* of new product reviews after the cruise -- our
sponsors have been wonderfully generous, and donated lots of yummy
products for our cruisers to sample and evaluate! I'd like to give them
credit right here -- Synergy Diet has donated stuff for the on-board
trade show, and is also sponsoring the After Dinner Sweet -- a different
low carb yummy every night! http://www.synergy.com . CarbSmart is has
sponsored low carb margaritas and daiquiris for our on-board cocktail
party, along with sending stuff for the trade show.
http://www.webbalah.net/carbsmart.html . Low Carb Grocery has sent
products for the trade show, and has also sent enough of their Aunt
Pearl's Low Carb Bake Mix that every cruiser can take some home and try
it. (Nowhere to bake biscuits on board, I'm afraid!) I've used this
mix to make such things as pot pies and cinnamon buns!
http://lowcarbgrocery.com . Low Carb Outfitters has sent products for
the trade show, including some of their many kinds of jerkies.
http://www.lowcarboutfitters.com . And Dr. Paul Kanter has donated a
bottle of his new carb-blocker product for each person on the cruise --
we can all try it and see if it works for us! I don't currently have a
URL for Dr. Kanter, but will certainly have one when we report on his
product later on. We'll have *lots* of product info on *everything*
when we return!

* We'll have lots more *recipes* in 2001 -- what would Lowcarbezine! be
without plenty of recipes!

* We would *love* to have more reader success stories in 2001, so send
'em in, and maybe you'll see *your* story here!

* We plan to revive the Low Carb Spotlight Food Of The Week, a feature
we ran a few times this past summer. I think it's helpful to remind you
of the virtues of foods you may have overlooked, and give you ideas on
how to serve them.

* Of course we'll keep answering Frequently Asked Questions!

* We'll try to run more menu suggestions -- ideas of what to serve with
what. Up to you, of course, but many of you have asked for this!
What else would you like to see in Lowcarbezine? How can we enhance
your low carb lifestyle?

My Favorite Low Carb Story of 2000

Okay, I'm cheaping out and reprinting an article from last April. But
I've gained thousands of readers since then, so it will be new to most
of you! This was my very favorite low carb news story of 2000:

Low Carb In The News!

A paper presented at the annual meeting of the Society for Adolescent
Medicine detailed a controlled trial of the efficacy of low carbohydrate
dieting versus low fat dieting for weight loss in obese adolescents.
The study, which involved teens between the ages of 12 and 18, who were
between 20 and 100 pounds overweight, was done at The Center for
Atherosclerosis Prevention at Schneider's Children's Hospital in Hyde
Park New York.

The result was that the teens who ate a low carbohydrate diet lost an
average of 19 pounds in 12 weeks, while those on a low fat diet lost an
average of only 8.5 pounds. This, despite the fact that the low carbers
were eating considerably more calories than the low fat dieters -- the
low carb teens ate an average of 1830 calories a day, as compared to an
average of 1100 for the low fat dieters. That's quite a difference!
Looks like Dr. Atkins was justified in asserting that a low carb diet
confers a metabolic advantage, huh?

The researchers apparently weren't surprised at the greater weight loss
in the low carb group, which interested me; it seems that the fact that
a low carbohydrate diet does, indeed, work for weight loss is starting
to sink in. What did surprise them a great deal was that the teens on
the low carbohydrate diet showed a greater improvement in bloodwork.
Total cholesterol fell in both groups, but triglycerides fell 33% in the
low carb group, as compared to 17% in the low fat group. Further, HDL
(good cholesterol) increased more in the low carbers than it the low fat
group, as well.

What both astounds and amuses me is this comment from one researcher:
"I worry about telling kids to go on nothing but a high-fat diet.
That's bad news... We're not talking about teaching kids over the
long-term to eat a healthy diet."

Run that by me again? They lose weight, their cholesterol drops, their
triglycerides drop, their HDL goes up -- and it's not a healthy diet?

Some people have a touching faith in a low fat diet that simply borders
on the religious, and apparently can't be shaken by something so trivial
as hard research.

Wish I'd gone on a "bad news" high fat diet as a teen. I bet my social
life would have been better for it!

Reader Review of _How I Gave Up My Low Fat Diet and Lost Forty Pounds!_

I have been on weight loss diets almost all of my life! I've lost and
gained over 500 pounds in my lifetime. This will no longer be the case
for me now that I have read Dana Carpender's book "How I Gave Up My Low
Fat Diet And Lost Forty Pounds" and am following her plan! I am now at
the lowest weight I have been in ten years and it was so easy to attain
this weight loss. How can you call this program a diet? I've eaten
steak, chicken, veggies, cheese and occasionally Peanut M&M's, ice cream
and chocolate mousse! This program is not a starvation plan. I have
always
felt so satisfied and healthy and have so much energy! Best of all I
know I will be able to stay on this food program for the rest of my
life! If you are tired of the diet yo-yo I highly recommend Dana's book.
It's a fun, fast paced, easy read and it will be the last diet book
you'll ever need to buy!
