KFC Does Grilled! FREE Tomorrow!

KFC was my favorite fast food place for a while. Their Tender Roast Chicken was quite good, and a couple of pieces with green beans on the side made a great fast low carb lunch. Then they discontinued the Tender Roast, and I haven't darkened their doorstep since.

Until now. I am going to my local KFC (just a few miles down the road) for lunch tomorrow. Why? Because they're debuting their new grilled chicken. And for tomorrow (Monday, April 27th) only, they're giving it away free. At least, that's what the television ads around here are saying. Hmmm... check the website... Yep! It's free everywhere!

So let's all try it tomorrow, shall we? Let's demonstrate to KFC that there's a strong market for fast food chicken that's not caked with breading. I'll report back tomorrow night and let you know what I thought, and hope that lots of you will have your own reviews.

Leg cramps and Vitamin D

A few years ago my foot doctor suggested that I drink tonic water (for the quinine) for my foot cramps...I bought sugar free and it did some good although you have to get used to the taste. However, I encourage you to try taking Vitamin D, at least 1000 IU. Just recently, 2 different people have had success; 1 person diagnosed with very low levels and was told to take 2000 IU by her doctor and another friend just this evening was telling me that she has been taking 2000 IU for the same problem. I take 1000 per day and it helps the "Indiana cabin fever" that plagues some of us during the winter months. Co-incidently, I have only a few foot cramps but NO leg cramps anymore.

Another Vitamin D Story

I don't know about leg cramps, but I had chronic foot pain since two foot surgeries for more than 10 years... and taking 1000 IU of Vitamin D each day eliminated it in about 5 days early last year. After such a long time, I still can't believe how nice it is to walk without constant pain!!! My foot specialist never found anything wrong with my foot, so no real treatment was ever possible. Honestly, I was about to buy a cane and check in to a pain clinic when a friend told me about Vitamin D. I am so thankful!!!

leg cramps

My doctor also suggested sugar free tonic. I love the taste, but haven't noticed any connection to cramps or lack of them. I've been taking 1000 units of vitamin D for about 2 years. No connection there, either. Mine seem to be more related to my activity level.

BTW, loved my free piece of chicken.

OMG - the BEST EVER Chicken

Even my husband who is a DIE-HARD Crispy KFC Fan, LOVED LOVED LOVED the new grilled chicken. I can't wait to hear how you liked it.

Kentucky Fried Chicken

By chance, I stopped for lunch Friday at our new KFC and tried the grilled chicken. It was delicious. The former KFC closed a few years ago, so there was no nearby source. Now I have 2 free coupons from the 2 papers we get on Sundays. I guess I'll be able to get a free piece if I get over there today. Unfortunately, their normal prices are high, and the pieces small.

Someone asked about leg cramps in the previous comment. I would like to know more about them, since I get bad ones occasionally.

In the Dallas/Fort Worth area, there is a coupon in today's newspaper that's good for one free piece of grilled chicken between now and May 17th! So maybe there won't be a one-day rush and we'll really all get to taste it. This is great news, though I typically don't eat out much. If it lasts, it will be a good option for low carbers - keeping in mind that the only suitable side is the (overcooked) green beans.

KFC Green Beans

Those aren't overcooked green beans, those are the Sacred Masonic Vegetable! I'd never had green beans cooked with ham or bacon until they were mushy until I moved to Southern Indiana, but they've been served at every Masonic banquet my husband has been to here, hence the moniker.

I actually kinda like them. I still prefer non-mushy green beans with sauteed almonds, but the Sacred Masonic Vegetable is okay.

Potassium or Iodine?

Thanks for the info on KFC Dana! I too was disappointed when they discontinued the unbreaded version.

I have two unrelated questions for you. First, what would you order at a Chinese restaurant? My family loves to go out for Chinese but so far everything I've tried to order seems to make me puffy and moody the next day (never mind the extra 3 or 4 lbs.). Of course I skip the rice, and sweet sauces, but I think there is corn starch in most everything else. Any ideas?

Also, I think I read in your first book (How I Gave up my Low-Fat Diet and Lost 40 Pounds) about leg cramps at night and how they are related when low carbing to a deficiency in some mineral - I thought it was potassium, but then I also thought you recommended kelp tablets to help and those give you iodine. Anyway, when I went back to the book to make sure, I couldn't tell exactly -- and the edition I have was published in 2003 so I thought you might have some new ideas to share also. Any thoughts would be much-appreciated. Thanks! Sally
